Conscious sedation
Sedation is used in dentistry to provide anxiety-free dental care to those who are nervous or anxious.
30% of the population avoids the dentist due to fear. Dental phobia prevents people from receiving necessary routine dental care, which then has an effect on their oral health and smile.
Here at Ewood dental in Blackburn Lancashire we offer safe, effective treatment under intravenous sedation. The sedative is administered by our oral surgeon Mark Edmondson who will look after you during your treatment.
What Is Sedation?
Sedation is a process used to establish a relaxed, easy and calm state through the use of sedatives.
Sedative drugs such as tranquillizers, depressants and nitrous oxide can be administered in a variety of ways.
We use a method which we find most effective called intravenous (IV) sedation. Intravenous sedation involves a small injection in the hand or the arm.
It may feel as though you slept through the treatment when in actual fact we maintain a level of consciousness for the patient’s safety and cooperation.
Benefits of Sedation
The main benefit of sedation within dentistry is that people often feel like their dental treatment lasts only a few minutes when in fact it may have taken a couple of hours. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as root canal treatment can be performed in fewer more relaxed appointments.
Patients who are afraid or anxious of undergoing dental treatment will benefit more from sedation and the comfortable, relaxing effect it has on you.
"Times your favourite tipple by ten and that is how you will feel but without the hangover in the morning" quote by sedation nurse Wendy Holding.
Overall Sedation within dentistry is a great way to reduce those fears which make you neglect your dental health, keep your dental problems to a minimal so drastic treatment is not needed.
The discovery of sedation dates back to the 1930,s but was not used in practice until 1959.
